Introduction to Lauren the Advertising Major

Hi, my name is Lauren Sutherland and I'm from Frisco, Texas. I'm a senior advertising major here at OU. I think the coolest thing about my major is how many different ways you can go with it; the creative side, client accounts, research, production, etc. I also minored in art, and my favorite class I took last semester was my sculpture class in the art school. The first day when I walked in I had no idea what to expect, and all the seats were in a circle with blocks of clay on the tray table in front of them. I ended up having so much fun and got to create some cool sculptures.

Over break I traveled to Los Angeles to go with my little sister to her college orientation at the University of Southern California.. and I am so jealous. It is gorgeous out there! But besides that, I spent my summer interning at D Magazine in Dallas, in their advertising sales department. It was great experience and I learned a lot!

I have two dogs, one that my family has had for about eight years and one that they rescued my freshman year of college, so three years ago. Scout is a West Highland Terrier, and Knox is a mix between a Chihuahua and a Corgi.

My career goals include finding a job out of college, one preferably in the creative field. I think my dream job would be doing graphic design/layout for a fashion magazine, such as Cosmopolitan, but I would love to stay in Dallas after I graduate. I only have 12 hours left so I am graduating this Fall 2019, so my short term goals include figuring out what I'm going to do post December!

The best experience of my life thus far has definitely been studying abroad in Italy in summer 2018. I loved learning about the culture and seeing all the beautiful places... you can learn more about my favorite place here.

If I had an extra day for fun, and unlimited money, I would definitely do something spontaneous like take a trip or go skydiving.

  2. Hey, Lauren!
I am also in Gaylord College as a Public Relations major...always exciting to meet another Gaylord student! I think graphic design is such an interesting field, and it is awesome you have a passion for it. I have family that lives in California, so I think it's great you got to visit your sister out there. Your dogs are AMAZING. I am pretty picky about the dogs I like but they seem awesome! Thanks for sharing with us.

  3. Hi Lauren!
Your dogs are so cute and seem so sweet! I love dogs and I always love seeing pictures of them. I'm glad you were able to pursue your creative side with the advertising but also with the art minor. We're in the same boat with graduating in December and trying to find something to do after(preferably a job) in Dallas. I hope you have a great last semester!

  4. Hi Lauren,

That sculpture is amazing! It must have taken a lot of time and skill! Your dogs are gorgeous. I am jealous of your sister also. The only time I have been to California was a layover in San Fran. Studying in Italy sounds like a wonderful experience. Do you speak any Italian?
Good luck on figuring out what to do after graduation and I hope you get your dream job!

  5. Hi Lauren!
I really like your sculpture of that head! It looks real! I think it is awesome that you just took up that class not really knowing what to expect. The first time I took a sculpture class was in higschool and I ended up making a wooden figurine of patrick star! I still have him to this day and I use him in every single one of my blog posts! Anyways, I hope you have fun in this class and I look forward to reading your fun and creative stories!

    Cheers!

  6. Hi Lauren!
Advertising is such an interesting and diverse field. I really hope you have a wonderful career in it.
Knox and Scout are absolutely adorable. I work with a corgi rescue and just love their curious, quirky personalities.
I am so jealous of your time in Italy. I would love to spend time there before I die! Working in the legal field, I am pretty limited to the United States. So I am jealous of people whose careers can take them international. Good luck!

  7. Hi Lauren!

It's such a coincidence to see someone else from Frisco because my parents recently moved out here. It must be awesome to have a major that gives you so much flexibility in terms of career choice. The skills you learn through advertising are definitely transferrable to any field. Your sculpture is amazing by the way! I don't think I'm very artistically gifted (but working on changing that because growth mindset!) but it would be very satisfying to create a work of art like that. I hope you have a great final semester at OU!

  8. Hi Lauren!

First off, that sculpture is amazing! I think it's awesome that you get to express your creative side in your classes and plan to continue that in your future career! I also love art, especially painting, however I have never messed with clay before. Your dogs are amazing!!! I used to have a Corgi growing up. They are the sweetest dogs! Best of luck figuring out your plans post-graduation!

  9. Hello Lauren,
First of all your dogs are so freakin cute! Also, I really like how you set up the pictures of your dogs to be side by side in your blog, it looks very organized. Being artsy is so much fun. Your sculpture is fantastic and now I wish I would have taken some more creative classes. I am also graduating this fall! I feel like it all went by so fast but I am very glad to know it is almost over. I wish you the best luck on finding your way after college. Best!

  10. I am always glad to see advertising majors in this class, Lauren; storytelling (in all its dimensions) is a big part of how advertising works, so I hope this class can be a relaxed and free-ranging experience in different kinds of storytelling. And your dogs are such cuties: they might insist on making an appearance in a story that you write. One of my all-time favorite ad stories stars an adorable dog: do you know this one? Travelers Insurance: Trouble ... so cute, and not even a word spoken! I can't say that it made me want to buy Travelers Insurance, but I'm definitely a fan of the advertising team that put that one together. Creativity indeed! And I hope you have some good creative adventures in this class. :-)

  11. Hi Lauren! That sculpture is incredible. Your talent for art is rare and it is definitely one you should put to use in the future! Also, your dogs are adorable. I have never seen a chihuahua and corgi mix, and now all I want is to see more of Knox. Scout is also a cutie! Good luck in your last semester of college. I hope everything goes well for you!

  12. Hi Lauren!

I admire your study and career goals. I could never have the creative skills to be an advertising major, and like you mentioned, I agree that it takes a lot of talents interplaying together to be good at it. And wow! You are such a good artist. That picture of your work looks so detailed and purposeful. It takes a special eye to be good at that. I also studied abroad in Italy the summer after my freshman year, and it was probably my best college experience thus far. Thanks for including the link to your travel post!

Scout and Knox are absolutely adorable (and photogenic)! I also studied abroad in Italy in Summer 2017, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Good luck with the rest of your semester!

Wow, that sculpture is really cool. It looks so real, you did a great job on it. I think that it is impressive that you had an internship over the past summer, that will be super helpful once you graduate and sre trying to get a job. Ooh, I bet Italy was a lot of fun, would you go back if you had the chance or would you prefer an entirely new adventure?

  16. Hey Lauren!

I'm also an ad major, happy to see I'm not the only one! I absolutely love your sculpture that you included here. I've always been better at digital design and illustration rather than traditional mediums so I'm really impressed by people who can do that. I'd also love to be doing graphic design/layout at a publication after graduation, I wish you the best of luck with that!! Congrats on graduating soon, and I can't wait to see the rest of your work for the semester!

  17. Hi Lauren!
First of all, the sculptures that you created look really cool and are quite amazing! I feel like it would be neat for even me to take an art class even though I am pre-med. I am also a big dog person as I have a 12 year old German shepherd. You seem to be headed for a lot of success on your advertising career, and I wish the best of luck for your final year at OU and your future endeavors.

  19. Hey Lauren,

First off, I want to compliment on how amazing your sculpture is! I feel like if I attempted something like that it would turn out to be a huge failure. Kudos on being so close to graduation! I bet you're excited! I hope by now that you've been able to explore your post-graduation options more. You sound like a very creative person with your sculpturing skills and desire to design for a fashion magazine. It was nice meeting you!

  20. Hey Lauren! Your sculpture is so amazing! I can tell you would be great in any advertising or art department because you clearly have so much artistic talent. It's so cool that you got to internship in advertising over the summer-- hopefully that kind of gave you an idea about what you might want to do after you graduate! I'm a senior too this year, so I definitely understand how daunting it can be to think about school being over. Good luck with this semester!

  22. Hi Lauren! Congratulations on making it to graduation! I think working for a magazine would be so cool. I'd like to do something similar when I graduate if I don't land my dream job as a screenwriter or novelist, haha.
I have to say your sculpture is amazing! You're clearly incredibly talented.
I wish you all the best!
