Lab Week 12: Advice to Writers

Lab Week 12: Advice to Writers

My favorite interview I read was Kate Angus'. When asked what the best writing advice she ever received was, she talked about how her high school writing teacher used to tell her class that all their writing was practice. However, she wanted to believe she was writing for the real deal. But as she got older, she realized that everything she did write was practice for the next thing regardless if it got published or not.

"We're always doing real work, but the real work is also always yet to come." - Kate Angus

Something else that I thought was interesting, just because I never thought about it too hard, was that writers get writer's block for years at a time. Kate, for instance, couldn't write anything new for two years. She compared writing to farmers letting their crops rotate to reproduce to the soil can rest and regain deplete nutrients, and I thought that was a very accurate metaphor.

  1. Hi Lauren! It was nice to read your story lab and get a better understanding of writer's block. It must be really difficult to write professionally to provide for yourself but then be faced with writer's block for years at a time. I also love the idea that every single thing you write is practice for the next thing you write. This can be incredibly motivating to think about when you're experiencing writer's block. Even though what you've written might not be perfect, you're still perfecting your skills.
